Seasons of Change
Within a span of 5 days, two of the strongest women I know, each came to me to share their stories about their pain. Their suffering was coming from feelings of being simultaneously stuck in a place they desperately wanted out of, but were lost. They both had become untethered from their personal knowing, and were experiencing an unfamiliar feeling of helplessness.
Both described their situations as overwhelming, because the problem was not singular, but circular, bringing dissatisfaction in many/all arenas of her life. Because it was all around them, it was obvious to them something was happening inside of them, but they just could not find their confidence and rhythm.
Sadly this pain in both of these beautiful, healthy and strong women had also started to manifest itself physically within their bodies. One with gut issues and the other suffering from anxiety attacks for the first time in her life.
In the 20 years I have known both of these women, I know them to never settle for less. They demand more of others and of themselves to get the most out of life. They are also both independent leaders, always in control, always moving forward. Yet despite all of those gifts, and previous success, they currently are in an ocean of self doubt and don’t believe that they have what it takes to steer themselves through this storm.
How did they get here?
Sometimes when the seasons of our lives start to change, it is very natural to not notice right away. We keep behaving as we are used to out of habit, on autopilot. Perhaps we do have that suspicion we need to make a change, but are too tired, or afraid to deal with it. Inevitably, time marches on, and when the season does change, you find yourself out in your sandals on a windy 45 degree day longing for your favorite fall boots. Then you are so uncomfortable, that you have to do something about it whether you are ready or not.
When everything seems so big and immovable on the outside, it’s best to start on the inside. Remember you are the only thing you can control. So find a space to calm yourself long enough to ask your heart, “how do I want to feel?” Then take one small step in any area of your life, sometimes in a different place than you might normally look, to get closer to that feeling.
Big movements start with small moves. With each attempt to get closer to the desired feeling, momentum will start to build. You will regain the strength and confidence you need to get through your struggle and cross over to the beauty and peace that are waiting for you on the other side.
